The colored brethren held a public debate in the court house last Friday night on the subject of Columbus and Wash ington, and in all the essentials it equaled Brer Gardner's Lime Kiln Klub. It was a hard tus sle between the giants, and the ad vantage, was alternately pas sing from Columbus to Wash ington and back. The first victory for Washington when the speaker stated , that when Geo. and Chlstopher were play boys together Geo. could al ways lick Chris, in a tussle. But Columbus soon had things his own way when it was elab orately explained how Colum bus when he landed had peeped through a telescope at the Fa ther and said the Lord's Pray er and sung-Amazin' Grace." But when if; was proven -that if it hadn't been for Washing- ton the darkies would yet bo in Africa eatingone anthor, he gained his lost ground. Things were getting lively by . this time. One of the Columbus adherents gave Wash, a lick in the short ribs by stating that Geo. didn't do nothing but hide behind trees and give orders to his men. This was denied, because Geo. got his horse shot. 'Yes," says the speaker,. ''his gwn men done it, kase he were puttin' on "too many airs." Things were now howling in favor of Columbus. But Washington was to hear from. Washington's friend a rose, a supprassed silence, per vading the hall, and said: "Gemmens of de jury, I say dat 5ir. "Vyashin'ton 'serves de mos' ": honah. While he were 'f eridin' his country, Columbus were lyin' on, a velvet bed, drinkin' out'n a silver cup, a floatin' dowji Kentucky river and spendin de Queen's mon ey." That settled it. The ju ry soon reported in favor of Washington. colds, coughs, and all affections of the throat and lungs. Chronicle: I have recently been on a prospecting exptdition among relative and friends in and around the celebrated "God's Country", of the good old State of Wilkes, and I can as sure you that there is quite a boom In the lumber and mineral in this locality. Hall, Owens & Co. are erecting a saw mill and will be ready for business in a very short time. There is any quan tity of poplar'.white oak, hickory, ash, gum, etc., in thb locality. I also visit ed the mining regions where there is considerable prospecting going on and considerable gold being brought to the surface. There are several companies prospecting in this region, and from the way the prospectors seem to be Inter ested, I imagine these hills and moun tains will be full of prospectors by next summer, and untold millions of gold will be brought to the surface.
